If I Blog They Will Come!

As I prepare to attend the California Business Association’s Communication Forum I’ve begun to ponder its topic, “Self Promotion in San Diego”. Self promotion is essential in today’s society for we are facing an abundance of highly skilled competition, more in fact, than any other generation. So wither it be a career, athletics, or just an internet blog, self promotion is essential.
Time and distance now affect my memories of high school, but looking back I’ve come to realize the need to self promotion. Though I wasn’t the athlete I am today, I succeeded in athletics beyond the means of my peers, partially due to my height, and I relied solely on the attention I received from tournaments or league games to expose myself to college recruiters. All while two fellow teammates of mine received scholarships to Pepperdine University, partially due to the relationship they had established with the coach through self promotion. At the time I had developed interest from high level recruiters in the sport as well, but I was left without the scholarship I’d longed for when I broke the middle metatarsal in my foot. That day still haunts my as the day my life changed forever because I didn’t have videotapes of games, relationships with coaches, or evidence of my past success.
Now college students must self promote more than ever to achieve their future career goals and life dreams. Every year a new wave of college students enter the job market and a each year various fields have an abundance of job while others fields struggle to have opportunities for new graduates. It is estimated that fifty-nine percent of students who either received their G.E.D. or high school diploma are attending college and with the increasing in foreigners in our university system as well as the majority of the job market requiring an advanced degree.
In today’s modern era it is essential to promote ones self in as many ways as possible in the most positive light through every means possible friends, previous careers, the internet, and our appearance. We can be promoted by our friends; Fortune magazine recently stated that forty percent of all those hired by the ‘100 Best Companies To Work For’ were through referrals by a current employee. Our previous careers wither they be interim or career oriented each can lead to disapproval or approval to the extent of a letter of recommendation or future career. With the power of the internet employers not have access to videos, blogs, and social networks all of which can result in a positive or negative review. Appearance is always a topic no one wishes to judge or be judged by in an interview, but everything from the way we dress, look, and other overall self presentation is judged.

Youth of the Nation

A common misconception in today’s society is that students and the youth of America should care about the politicians, but the truth is in the definition; Politics- the art or science concerned with winning and holding control over a government (Webster.com). It appears that today’s politicians will lie, cheat, steal, and deceive the American people in order to get elected or hold control in the government; the most accurate example being John McCain.
Mainstream Republican radio hosts, newspapers, and online media sources all bring John McCain’s history into question and why wouldn’t they? The overwhelming evidence suggests that John McCain is not a conservative and is in fact a liberal. He voted against a Bush tax cut, which did stimulate the economy. He voted for an amnesty bill that would give all the illegal immigrants in this county citizenship in 24 hours! But of all things he wants to stay in Iraq and possibly attack Iran. I’m not suggesting an immediate removal of troops from Iraq, but we are increasing military spending which will weaken the dollar and ultimately keep the United States in the direction of a recession all while we help build a nation that is constantly influenced by Iran and Al Qaeda. Right now we are just the wet sand holding up the sand castle, which is bound to break away once we leave. We know John McCain was a P.O.W. and should be honored as such, but does that service justify the position of Commander and Chief?
Since his time in Vietnam he has been a politician and knows nothing of working in the private sector. Once you are in political office for so long some one is bound to bribe you to vote in a certain way and the longer you are a politician the less a person can relate to the people they govern. I am not suggesting that I am a better candidate for president, but I know and understand the mindset of a twenty-one year old college student. McCain is a politician and has been so for many years therefore he understands the needs and mindset of politicians.
As student and youth of the nation how can we be expected to sort through the fallacious banter, i.e. the debates, and decipher the truth? John McCain is a true politician and trained in the deception of the American people, why are Republicans willing to nominate him? We need a president to bring us out of the dark ages of George Bush as Ronald Regan did for Jimmy Carter and that candidate is not John McCain.

McDonalds is Back!

Can a business really come back from the dead? McDonalds the corporate juggernaut appears to be making a comeback! Shocking isn't it? But today I reluctantly walked into a McDonalds and a sixty year old lady with a huge smile on her face came over to me and offered me a sample of their Angus deluxe burger. Then I was assisted by a short skinny man with another large grin and to my surprise he was kind and courteous. The manager stopped to ask how I was doing and when I asked the same he gave an apparently sincere, "Every day's a good day!" Within a few minutes I received my food along with the new iced hazelnut coffee and sat down at a near table. I was again amazed to find out my food appeared fresh, the iced coffee was good, and the restaurant appeared spotless. It appears they are modeling after Starbucks and creating a family fun environment again.
After reading this you probably think I secretly adore McDonald's, but up until today I had the stereotype that the service is always horrible, that the food would be adequate, and the restaurant would be filthy. Given the recently slump in the coffee company Starbucks, McDonald has a chance to break into the near monopolized coffee industry. The age old franchise McDonald's maybe in the process of a successful and much need makeover that will restore it to its former glory.
